Out of Love: Finding Your Way Back to Self-Compassion is a book from my heart to yours.
In short and personal pieces, I hope to inspire you to choose self-compassion—for it is a choice, and we must make it again and again in order to unlearn the pattern of self-criticism. This is a pattern I know well, having learned it from a young age. For me, it manifests as perfectionism, worry, anxiety, and depression. Out of Love: Finding Your Way Back to Self-Compassion is about my journey of unlearning self-critical patterns and returning to my self-compassionate heart, which was never really lost, just buried underneath conditioned thinking.
This book is for anyone who has struggled with self-criticism and shame, and who longs to heal that core wound of unworthiness and live a life full of purpose and meaning. Self-compassion is the key to happiness and resilience, the key to living a deeply authentic and courageous life.
This book is also for anyone who has struggled to make sense of tragedies and traumas. It was self-compassion that helped me survive first a breast-cancer diagnosis and double mastectomy in 2016, and then the difficult decision to leave my husband of ten years and his subsequent suicide in 2017. The only way I was able to make sense of all this was by breaking my heart open even more to life and choosing self-compassion.
Out of Love: Finding Your Way Back to Self-Compassion tells the story of how the practice of self-compassion taught me how to manage anxiety and stress, how to be authentic in relationships, and how to let go of comparison and be truly creative.
Above all, self-compassion has shown me that belonging is something I already have—within myself. Through stories and journaling prompts, I hope to show you the same.
